Summer At The Library!

This summer at the library there's a whole host creative, fun things for children and families take part in.

From artist-led workshops in musical instrument-making, sound-mixing and songwriting, to a special Film Screening in collaboration with Crosby Plaza and Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, and a programme of creative play for children starting school in September, there's fun things to do for everyone!  

Places are limited so make sure to book your spot!

A summer of sounds and music in Sefton Libraries with artists Charlie Peacock and Mali Draper.

Now Playing: Remixing Library Sounds with Mali

Join Mali to collect sounds from around the library and use digital samplers to turn the sounds into music! We will use the Koala Sampler app to record sounds around the library and remix them into our own musical compositions.

Now Playing: DIY Instrument Making with Charlie 

Charlie will show you how to make your own musical instrument using common household items so that you can replicate them at home. Everyone will make an instrument to take with them using simple materials and Charlie will show some of his own made out of tupperware, elastic bands, parts of a dismantled piano and other pieces of wood!

Join artsits Emma, Leila and Mia for sensory and creative school readiness workshops to help children develop the skills they need to get started in September. For children aged 3 & 4.

Artists Rie Nakajima and Pierre Berthet will show you how to make your own moving-sounding sculpture out of metal, wood, shells, plastic materials and household items. We'll play them together, improvise, watch and listen. Bring something from home to experiment with!

Ages 8 - 15.

We're delighted to collaborate with Liverpool Arab Arts Festival for another year, bringing four short animated films to the Plaza Cinema, centred around the theme of home. The screening will be followed by a family-friendly workshop with Karema Munassar exploring roots, memory and belonging through drawing, storytelling, mapping and shadow puppetry. Everyone is welcome.

Have you ever wanted to write your own song? Join artist, writer, musician and filmmaker Niloo for a workshop where we’ll listen to song lyrics together, use music for inspiration, and try some writing exercises to create our own.

Mali Draper is a sound artist who is interested in how sound can reshape our sense of time, place, and attention. Through curiosity and play she explores how different sound technologies can invite people to move and listen in different ways. In her work, she often takes inspiration from processes in nature such as the slower pace of ecosystems.

Charlie Peacock makes experimental instruments, bringing together his background as a multi instrumentalist with a strong urge to tinker. With a DIY sensibility and with a focus on slow processes, his work draws freely from new and old technologies to transform scraps, broken pieces and found objects into physical artefacts that play music in unexpected ways.

Rie Nakajima is a sculptor based in London. She creates sounds using a combination of motorised devices and everyday objects in installations and performances. Her art is between sculpture and music with improvisation at the heart of it.

Pierre Berthet is a musician based in Belgium. He builds sculptural sound objects and installations made from steel, plastic, water, motors, vacuum cleaners and other items and has presented them in exhibitions and performances across music venues, festivals, galleries and other outdoor venues.

nil00 is a musician, writer, filmmaker and fine artist. Working across mediums, nil00’s music, digital media and art pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling.
