rest reading group

25th Apr 2024, 12:00pm
Crosby Library

For April’s Rest Reading Group with artist Niki Colclough we’ll be reading sections of The Condition of the Working Class in England by Friedrich Engels together.

The Rest Reading Group is a regular collective reading session, convened by artist Niki Colclough centred on texts that engage with rest: as resistance, as care, as gentle protest, and a way of nurturing interspecies relations. The group builds on a curiosity about the role of rest in addressing the ecological crisis.

Thursday 25th April

12 midday – 1pm

Crosby Library

We have discussed in previous sessions how we might frame rest as an act of gentle resistance against pressures to be productive, to be active, and to consume. A lot of these ideas come from thinkers such as Engels, writing about capitalism in the Victorian era. Together we will read sections of this classic which deals with the conditions of the English working classes in England and discuss together.

As always, no need to read the book before the session, we’ll be reading sections together.

Handouts will be given out of key sections that we’ll be reading and copies of the book will be available to take out of the library if you’d like to explore the reading further! Book via Eventbrite here if you’re able – otherwise email hello@atthelibrary.co.uk, or speak to a librarian at Crosby.
